Gmail and GCal - the beginning of the end for small independent Calendaring startups

by Roger Kondrat on May 17, 2006

Nearly a month back I saw Gcal (google calendar) announced - finally - on google’s blog which is great because it was much anticipated by the geek/blogger community at large due to the expectation that google will put a lots of sweet ajax code making it easy to use like Gmail (hopefully).

A couple weeks back, I noticed that little features have been popping up in Gmail beginning the eventual integration that many predicted would happen ‘eventually’. But the great thing is it’s already happening.

Already I can click on the Gcal link, top left of the web page and go straight to Gcal.

Or when I begin composing an email I can choose to make it event driven by clicking on the Add Event link to the right.

The best part now though is their newest feature at least that I have seen is ‘Would you like to Add to calendar‘ this is can be found above the advertising to the right of your email conversation.

Obviously they are scanning emails for key event info because when I clicked on that link it partially filled my event related data. Very cool even though it got my event information completely wrong. I am sure in time it will get better.

I can’t wait to see what they do next, also with the new APIs announced new mashups will sprout up all over soon enough.

Sorry if this article is a little dated its been in my draft box for about a month.
