Gmail email filter - does it ever work?

Comments

I am an admitted gmail user, I drool at the table of growing storage capacity, and use I do love the fact I can search my email - privacy be damned.

However I have started subscribing to a couple email newsletters (diversifying away from purely RSS driven content) and so everyday I get about 10 emails all appreciated and requested from various sources. Now being a busy guy and an email account neat freak (you know you are too) I thought I had better check out gmail filter feature before its too late.

So I checked it out and it was actually really easy to use (I don’t tend to like filter programs) and so I set up a few filters (10+) while I was testing it out.

Next day. No more email newsletters. The result a big satisfied smile on my face. Then two weeks go by and I wake up a nice Monday morning (is there such a thing as a nice Monday morning?) and as usual the first thing I do is check my email.

Boy was I in for a surprise - got 25 emails all from the same newsletters I had filtered just 2 weeks earlier. Initially I thought maybe these crafty newsletter providers made periodical tweaks to their emails just to ensure that once in a while their newsletters got viewed and not dumped in a folder as I had done. But when I checked my filter and did a test search those exact same newsletters that had penetrated my filter were miraculously found and filtered.

Am I going nuts? Does this make sense to anyone else? Does gmail have faulty temperamental filters?

I can’t find a reason for this on my end, but I am curious if anyone else can or if others are experiencing a similar pain in silence.
