Every once and while I find bits and bobs of information I feel is valuable but isn’t worthy a detailed post so every week I will try to do a round-up. As well from now on they will just contain a number e.g. Round-up #1, etc
So without further wasting your time here is Round-up #1’s material
I am planning another event for 11 September in London and hopefully if all goes well I will have the location booked by Monday evening. Fingers crossed. If you haven’t heard about the event don’t worry I haven’t promoted it because of the lack of a booked location. Soon though.
This week the first ever all female ( +Robert Scoble, Guy Kawasaki and John Battelle) Blog conference came and went. Exciting stuff really. Without women getting involved Blogging is just a one legged racer, so we need to get those babes writing copy
Oops almost forgot to give the link of Blogher
Blogher was interesting for me (I didn’t go) but I mean as someone that doesn’t think male or female, I just read what I read. But if you are a consultant or a professional that advises on technology (as I do) its career mistake if you don’t make every effort to read what woman are saying. How are woman percieving blogging? What tools are they using? At what age are woman joining the blogosphere? Are they joining for professional or personal reasons? Are woman better bloggers?
Interesting isn’t it? Scoble talks about some of what he learned there.
Also I have spoken with a few startups lately and one of them is looking into patenting some of their work e.g. Fleck and both of us had the same question ‘Will the blog community find their work ingenious enough that they look past the patent or will they treat his company like Amazon when they patented the infamous ‘1-click’ patent? Fair question, but I don’t think there is a simple answer. We will just have to take each situation as it comes.
Patenting is very complex and most small companies spend lots of time when deciding to patent on actually getting through the process, as it is an arduous task and not as easy as the IBM’s of the world make it look. Research is the most important part of patenting and now with PattenStorm an online US Patent office search engine its that much easier. They even have directory search available.
Another Network news article spouting the virtues of easy money if you build a website and use Google Adsense. Its just silly that this kind of news is still allowed to be published. No, don’t build a website/blog/any business if you think its just easy money. Internet or not there is no such thing as easy money. God help those that think its easy money.
The UK’s mobile providers have introduced a new mechanism that will allow them to block 80% of all mobiles within 48hrs of their reported theft. Not bad. So if you do steal a mobile phone just make sure you get calling as you only have 2900 minutes to call all your friends around the world and those naughty numbers (£3/min = £9000). Thanks guys. Thats a very helpful service (read: Sarcasm).
Want help promoting your blog for free? Rojo is offering just a service like that call FeedShare. Looks interesting. If you have used it and found it valuable let me know.
Are you planning on starting a business? Are you telling all your mates how you got this idea and want to start a company? Well get in line 90% of people talk this kinda crap and never do anything about it. But if you are the type that is hardcore and in need of bits of information here and there, then you may find this list 17 Pithy Insights For Startup Founders valuable if not at least amusing.
T-Mobile. I have cancelled my ‘Three’ contract and this week will likely be ordering my new T-mobile handset. Why am I sharing well because Ewan over at SMS Text News gave me some valuable advice that was helpful especially as I am a blogger and always on the move. For £10 t-mobile provides unlimited email and internet access. Now from what I understand T-mobile won’t let you use MSN messeger or any of the others but in reality that isn’t true. I like the fact that clients, colleagues, and family will be able to know when I am available or not just by my messaging icon. For only £10!!
Are you new to the blogosphere? What is a blogosphere? Go to answers.com for help because you are so green, even the lettuce is embarrassed. But if you aren’t that green and you are trying to get it on then Steve Rubel is a guy you should know. Steve is cutting edge and although I don’t always agree with him I do recommend him. Recently he wrote two posts I really enjoyed reading CEOs Should Not Go Into the Blogosphere Alone and Wikipedia Data Added to Google Co-op
Well that’s all for this weeks round-up.
