Scoble vs TechCrunch? Pick your man

by Roger Kondrat on August 1, 2006

Recently I was reading a post about how Robert Scoble an original blogger (started when there was less than 1000 bloggers in the world) compared in traffic and draw to Michael Arrington’s TechCrunch network.

I thought it was a interesting concept. After all TechCrunch has come a long way in just 1yr. So who has the larger viewer ship, influence, etc. Ultimately I decided to compare the men (as best one can) more directly so I used data from their personal blogs and Google’s Trend data.

First off if I have any conflicts of interest here they are - I have met Michael and my impression wasn’t positive (but it was only a first impression) and I haven’t met Robert so my impression is neutral.

Comparison
First lets consider where both came from:
Michael: A Lawyer that did work in Silicon Valley left the tech world but then supposedly came back because Web2.0 was so exciting and started the what would eventually become the TechCrunch Network (I’m lazy so I didn’t confirm this just been told in passing)

Robert: A drop out that has three big claims to fame, he was an early adopter of blogging, co-authored Naked Conversations(very successful business blogging book), and he joined Microsoft as a technology evangalist.

Without further phaffing about here is the data that I have collected.

Google Trend Region Data
***Lost in Wordpress upgrade
Scoble wins round 1 - total domination in the top six blogger markets

You will notice that Scoble as a personality is far in the lead in all major ‘trackable’ markets (I tried getting data on China but couldn’t sorry)

Technorati Blog Status:
CrunchNotes - Michael Arrington’s personal blog is Ranked No. 2,939 :(
Scobleizer - Robert Scoble’s personal blog is ranked No. 20

Final round - Scoble wins again

Resources of information used:
Wikipedia: Robert | Michael (there was nothing on Mike so I linked to the Wikipedia article on TechCrunch)
Technorati: Top 100 Blogs list
Personal Blogs: Scobleizer | Crunchnotes

Ultimately this is an amusing comparison at most and done just for fun, but I thought why not.

My motivation was to consider if I were a corporation which of these two would I hire Robert or Mike.
If I was an American company I would probably consider Mike because if you add in his TechCrunch network you have lots of impact but if you are a global company like Nike for instance I am thinking Scoble.

What do you think? Which celebrity would you choose to represent you? Should I have posted their pictures and done a vote on sex appeal? :)

    Roger,
I think comparing Scoble and Mike based on global readership of their blog is not appropriate because Mike's TechCrunch has been focusing on more of product reviews/trends/innovation in mostly USA/Europe. As soon as they start covering worldwide, I think they will have more audience.
Scoble has become a known blogger to many parts of the world after his successful stint in Microsoft. So he is bound to have more audience.

Your comparison opens a crucial question for corporation, are they planning to embrace blogging in a big way?

Well I don't think its inappropriate but I see what you are saying. As I said in the post it was mostly meant to be a fun non-critical critique of their differences and strengths in readership.

Also I agree with the question - are corporations planning on embracing blogging and if they are who should represent their brand.

However, there is another question for me. Should corporations want celebrity bloggers to lead their brand online or should the effort remain community oriented with employees blogging at their leisure with clients?
