Over at Crowdstorms blog is a really great post concerning the UK’s ability to produce global Internet brands e.g Google, Yahoo!, etc
Quote:
Can the UK really create an internet venture to rival the US big guns like YouTube?
A big two page spread appeared yesterday in the Media Guardian discussing whether UK based companies could make it big on a world scale, especially in the US.
It mentions the likes of Skype that was sold to eBay earlier this year, and also Last.fm which is now tipped as one of the UK’s leading web 2.0 firms - apparently. It’s also true that companies like us no longer have expensive setup and operating costs and rather keep this as low as possible while growing the business organically with a superb product.
While there are UK VC firms and Angel Investors in the UK - it is nowhere near as advanced as the US market. I thought it would be useful to contrast the two options where you setup a new venture:

I’m developing my “web 2.0 help desk software” organically, it might not be “big” as there’s plenty of big fishes in this pond already, but I still think that doing business in the UK doesn’t have to be any worse, really - it’s a matter of overcoming the circumstances.
Web 2.0 is good in the financial aspect, that I never even thought about raising an external financing

Hopefully a Billion Dollar Question
The joy of this wave of the ‘Net revolution is it needs far less money (probably an order of magnitude less) to get up and running NOW (I suspect that will change), so I think its a damn good time to start.
My own view is this can be an Angel, rather than VC funded game for quite a while yet.
As to incubation, what happened to all the Incubators? Are any still going - is it time to start a new one?
