Get more traffic when you misspell!!

by Roger Kondrat on January 17, 2007

Have you ever done a search in Google and found that a keyword to your website was commonly miss spelled?  This happens often and can actually be used to a clever website operators advantage depending on their circumstances.

If you are say selling a unique product such as dandruff shampoo and find people search ‘danruff’ nearly as much yet the competition/positioning of your competitors is poor under the misspelled search this could be a niche your company could fill.

What’s interesting to me are these two thoughts:

1) The long tail is the obscure.  Misspelled words are obscure and niche
2) Branding a product in a world that is connected (Internet) could mean creating a name for a product/service based on thought number one is the most important decision you ever make.

When you go to market your products have a thought about how the long tail could affect your sales, but think outside the box.  If you are selling toilet paper its probably near impossible to differentiate you from everyone so whom ever comes up first on my search is probably getting my attention.

If you need an old school example names that mean nothing but imply something, look no further than your local car dealership.  Car companies have been doing this for years and years.

Just a thought.  What do you think?
