WP 2.1 - Safe for your blog?

by Roger Kondrat on January 23, 2007

Wordpress 2.1 has only been out for a short while (less than 12hrs) and conversations about upgrade issue’s has grown with each passing hour.

This plug-in broke my site, my database needed manual fixes, I had to make changes to my theme, etc. Its safe to say although this upgrade is definitely going to benefit us all, when it does is a matter of interpretation. If you are not a programmer or familiar with WP code then maybe its best to think of this as the ‘early’ early adopters phase and wait a month or so before you upgrade.

If you don’t agree or agree let me know. If you have tried upgrading tell us about your experiences.

Conversations that have started already in the blogosphere:
Scott’s Coffee House
Lucy Lu
Robservatory
Maunderlust

Plugin specific posts - tips can be found in here for where to get compatible plugins, how to test etc.

Thanks for the link, I upgraded fine from 2.0.7 -> 2.1 RC1 -> 2.1. Plugins should not break the site at all, maybe u can give more information like error and stuff.

What Plugin? Are you talking about the wordpress update? Are you talking about a plugin that you already had installed (ie: Old) or are you talking about Gamerz’ plugin?

While I’m not a plugin writer (yet), I’ve been digging around in the WordPress code for awhile now and I’d like to know what type of problems people are having with it - especially since I’m about to upgrade to 2.1.

I haven’t upgraded, but others have. I am holding off personally until I see more posts saying, this plugin or that plugin has been updated.

Which plugin’s I am not certain which ones. I do know people like Gamerz have updated theirs, added new ones, and have thrown their support behind 2.1 by offering to help.

Its good to see the community rallying like that.

There is a list apparently on Wordpress.org somewhere that has all the plugins that are confirmed compatible with 2.1 so if you just scroll through it looking for your plugins being listed then that would be what I recommend.

I should point out Gamerz doesn’t believe the plugins should break, but thats probably because he coded his the ‘right way’ when he wrote them where as if you are a cheeky programmer you may chose the lazy road and code what gets the job done e.g. broken plugins every major release.

Justin I hope this helps. Sorry I can’t be of more help.
