About a month ago now Three.co.uk a UK mobile phone network launched their X-Series mobile phone strategy.
The X-series is a new type of mobile phone service that is flat rate data and allows for an open un-restrained connection to the Internet. No tariffs, and no service restrictions (including Instant Messaging and Voice over IP software).
The flat rate part of the X-Series isn’t unique on its face but its lack of any restrictions is a first. I use T-Mobile and they have a similar a program and this is where I vere back to my point.
The X-Series offer is great and very appealing to me for one reason, it allows me to us Gtalk and Skype on my mobile (legally). However as someone that tried those programs on my T-mobile (3.5G) service, I can tell you the service is a bit choppy.
Lots of problems getting getting a steady amount of bandwidth, a regular connection, and a phone that operates the software in an effective and user friendly way.
So if you join Three thinking X-Series is the greatest thing ever, well yes it is - on paper - but I would recommend you utilise your 7 day consumer rights and try Skype out immediately to determine before day 7 whether this is a service that can be counted on.
Just be aware (especially my fellow bloggers), and be skeptical. X-Series is a good start but its likely to be just that, a good start.
