If its cheap it must be simple

by Roger Kondrat on March 20, 2007

Recently I went back to University after nearly 10 years and my course - MA Marketing, is interesting because it adds structure to my existing experience and opens my eyes to some of the things I already observed but never took note of e.g. Newton noticed that Apples fell from trees like everyone else, but he experienced it differently. I like that sometimes. I do lots of ‘hmmmm, oooooh,…..’ or ‘I never fully realised or appreciated…..’.

Its lots of fun but I digress.

Now I am reading about all the Marketing basics and learning all the metrics, terms of core marketing and as such I couldn’t help as I read about product complexities and exclusivity to appreciate that if something is complex it is typically (not always) expensive, rubic-cubes excluded of course.

The next thought that popped into my head was the TV Remote Controller. TVs simple, TV channels simple (click, click, …..), but TV Remote’s are brutal. My Mum has had the same TV for 10 years and she still asks me how to use her Remote.

How do I switch to the VCR? How do I use the DVD player? The screen just went blank…

So many people hate Remotes. My partner even fights with me about why I use the NTL (UK Cable network service) Remote for volume instead of the TV Remote. She prefers the TV and I prefer the NTL Remote.

So what is this article about other than my life? Well my question is, if you had to pay for a Remote control rather than just the 6 basic buttons on a TV, would you pay for it? And if so how much would you pay?

I am on the fence as I find Remotes easy to use (I am a geek though) but the hassle Remote’s cause around me is possibly more than I am willing to deal with and would consider just chucking it in the garbage most days.

Your thoughts? What do you think of Remotes? Any other products like this you can think of that are cheap but complicated and a regular pain in the a$$.
