Myspace further ahead than you may realise - Compete No.s not Alexas

by Roger Kondrat on April 6, 2007

Using compete I have taken a look at what is happening in the world of Social Networks. Everyone has heard about how huge MySpace is but also (myself included) we have talked about how Orkut (Googles’ Social Network) has come out of nowhere and really charged MySpace and in some cases jumped ahead briefly.

If you look below you can see what Compete’s opinion is, Orkut and the other MySpace contenders are no where near the numbers of the No.1.

A couple things to consider are Alexa just gives out numbers but doesn’t clarify how or where it got them, whereas Compete and HitWise only display US numbers. This is important to mention because everyone expects the reason Orkut can look so competitive with MySpace is because of its International appeal e.g. Brazil, and Indian.

Lastly, for me I find it particularly interesting that Bebo and Facebook the ‘quoted’ number 2 and 3 of the most popular US Social Networks after MySpace of course are doing so poorly. Didn’t Bebo just a few months back get massive funding for this very reason? To grow its US base, well if that is the case and these numbers are to be believed than it was definitely not money well spent as it hasn’t even taken them out of Asystole (when a heart stops beating) in the US market.

Are you part of one of these monstrous social networks? If so which one? Also if you do comment please let me know your country too. Can anyone take over or at least take on MySpace?
