iPhone killer…Hahaha..When will they learn, new phone from Samsung - Omnia i900

by Roger Kondrat on June 10, 2008

VnuNet has this to say about Samsungs new phone.

Samsung has moved to take the wind out of Steve Jobs’s sails this afternoon by unveiling its Omnia i900 smartphone just hours before the expected launch of Apple’s much-hyped 3G iPhone.

Samsung’s would be iPhone killer clearly draws much from its rival in terms of design. It features a 3.2in 240 x 400 pixels haptic touch screen which offers vibration feedback, as well as a 5-megapixel camera.

Samsung Omnia takes on 3G iPhone

MobileMag wrote with a greater focus on the specifications of the new mobile from Samsung.

Other notable specs on this smartphone include Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, quad-band GSM, 7.2 Mbps HSDPA, 5MP CMOS camera with smile detection, up to 16GB of internal memory, GPS navigation and geotagging, TouchWiz user interface, FM radio with RDS, Bluetooth 2.0, and integrated Wi-Fi. Look for it launch during CommunicAsia in Singapore later this month.

Personally I don’t think this phone is a serious mobile. I do admit this is more of a hunch than ’scientific’ knowledge but the advertising and promo material seems consistent with a lower end ‘wannabe’ product than a serious high-end competitor.

read the specs! it has a faster HSDPA modem, a better camera with flash and face detection, wifi as well, video calling !!!!! this is basically an upper end europe/asian phone, and we know that europe and asia are far far more advanced in cellphone tech that the states (they have had 3g networks, 3g broadband and video calling for years, its only being deployed in the states now!) due to the states adopting a non GSM standard years back

add to that A-GPS up to 16 gig memory and FM radio, then this baby out specs the iphone considerably. although the only thing iphone has going for it is a slick interface

    Hi Mike(eysk)

Thanks for dropping by and taking the time to comment.

I did read the spec and did thing wow until I found out it ran Windows Mobile 6.1.

Granted Windows is improving all the time, granted my experience of Windows Mobile was 5.x (WM) or earlier and lastly my last experience was an HTC which is known for their poor construction and fit-finish but I still think it is an inferior OS.

Also consider this the 'Touch-Flo' from HTC has a higher spec than iPhone 1.0 but would you buy it over the iPhone? I know I wouldn't.

Maybe Samsung as a higher quality manufacturer did more with WM6.1 and their hardware to fashion a great product and I am wrong, but until I see it in my hand and hear user feedback I am betting iPhone 2.0 will destroy it in overall product value.

PS. Yeah America is still catching up with us but some of their mobile habits make for an easier barrier to entry such as the fact that carriers charge them to send and recieve making new mobile services that rely on texting cheaper and/or possible such as Brightkite.com

    Cheers :)

remember that iphone did pretty badly sales wise in both europe and asia ... as these markets were mature enough to see its flaws beyond the fancy inteface. and the new 3g phones's specs are essentially a low end 3g phone in these territories (i mean 3.2 HDSPA when the standaard is 7.2, 2 meg camera when the standars is 5meg, sony are releasing the 8 megapixal c905).

i have used the omnia (i900) when i was in the mobile world congress barcelona, and i have to say its amazing. its specs are what the iphone should havebeen behind its great interface. plus haptic feedback is well worth apple looking into for future.

i am not disputing that iphone has a slicker inteface, but win 6.1 holds up as well, and has alot of 3rd party software support.

on the usa mobile front, they are in fact getting better, T-Mobile has in the last 7 years since it opened shop in the states, revolutionised the american cell phone habit by introducing the same low rate for cross state calls and abolishing any fees to receive calls or text messages regardless if yr not in ur home state. basically they have emulated the european/asian model

I think we are not disagreeing so much as placing a different emphasis on the features that we value.

For me using my E61i (I know is old and archaic now) as my day to day mobile I have developed a very clear idea about what I feel will help make life easier for me.

Here are a couple that come to mind off the top of my head:
    - I don't like the way mobile software is sold and it feels often that it is a bit of a hack job
    - A camera is important but I carry my small camera everywhere anyway and actually feel if it had bluetooth I would prefer to bluetooth my great 'camera' to my mobile and then use the mobile to upload the feature.
    - Screen size is important and I love mine as it was the best in the world (equal to N95) when I bought it.
    - Anything 3.5G is fine by me as I move over 500MB every month minimum but other than a bump from my 3G to any 3.5G standard I am not stressing it. I can almost watch and experience media now without much concern so having the top 3.5G standard is more of a 'wow I got it' rather than a need or even want.
    - Windows crashes and has 'windows' problems and that bothers me. With my mobile I enjoy the Symbian system, it seems to rarely inflict me with problems and Nokia's, SonyEricsson's, et al tend to make a great product whereas you really don't know with Windows phones.

Also I can't say that I have used the Omnia so you have me there - I am unarmed against someone who has actually touched and played with it. ;))

All that being said I will definitely when I fly back to the UK take a close look at it like I did the last (first) Samsung touch phone. Assuming I get a chance to look (is it shipping?) at it before I make my contract gets renewed in (late) July.

    Cheers

Oh yeah and another couple features I am dying for as I want to actually use them is GPS and directional based navigation.

Actually I am not a fanboy and I don't even intend to buy an iPhone,
tempting as it may be so no you are very wrong.

Other than that very insightful comment what mobile would you recommend for
    us 'fanboys'?
