Cool new iPhone app that works with Firefox

by Roger Kondrat on June 23, 2008

qr codes for flickrMy man David Stone and his business partner Josh Russell have developed a Firefox plugin that allows you to quickly download pictures you like from Flickr using your iPhone.

This is done by downloading software that David and Jason created for Greasemonkey a plugin for Firefox. Once you have Firefox you download the Greasemonkey (no its not a bad word) and and restart your browser.

Once you have restarted your browser click *JavaScript file to download the right tool.  All in all about a 2-3min exercise.

With all the files, plugins, etc setup correctly when you browse on Flickr you will see what is referred to as a QR code.  This code is a weird looking square off to the right of the picture and that square is really a (way) more advanced version of a barcode. Inside the QR Code is information that tells the iPhone where to look for that image should you desire to download it.

This method beats hands down with speed and accuracy the ability of the user to get to the image and download it.

Now you need to install the appropriate programme (this one, this one and this one - there are more just do a search for iPhone QR Codes) for the iPhone which will allow your iPhone to understand that funny QR type barcode.  This programme can be found here

*JavaScript files can be dangerous so always be alert but I know David briefly and his reputation so I feel comfortable promoting his work (essentially vouching for him). I don’t believe he or Josh would ever write a dangerous JavaScript file intentionally, they are just not that sort.

For those who made it this far well if you are keen to try it out you can download my contact details by decoding the QR code below.
