Fastest Production SUV Around Nurburgring – Range Rover Sport SVR

0

The Range Rover Sport SVR has lapped the famous Nordschleife circuit at the Nürburgring in Germany in 8 minutes 14 seconds, making it the fastest production SUV around the Nürburgring. The impressive feat was carried out by a Land Rover driver testing a standard production example of the potent new performance flagship.

Range-Rover-Sport-SVR

The new SVR, which made its dynamic debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in June returned to the Nürburgring this month to continue an exhaustive testing schedule. The Range Rover Sport SVR is powered by an uprated version of Land Rover’s 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine, which has been tuned to deliver 550PS – a 40PS increase over the existing V8 Supercharged derivative.

The handling characteristics of the SVR have been honed on the demanding Nürburgring Nordschleife because the undulating circuit’s challenging layout represents the ultimate test for high performance vehicles.

Mike Cross, Chief Engineer Vehicle Integrity, said:”The Nürburgring is a benchmark for vehicle development and testing, and cars become stronger, more durable and faster over its 13 miles and 70-plus corners. We wanted to see whether an SUV could behave like a performance car in this challenging environment. The results are spectacular and the
Range Rover Sport SVR has demonstrated outstanding on-road performance capabilities.”

Development of the Range Rover Sport SVR has been carried out by Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations team, with the aim of producing the most performance-focused Range Rover Sport ever. This has been achieved without compromising the vehicle’s class-leading all terrain capabilities or high levels of comfort.  The Range Rover Sport SVR features a twin-speed transfer case to provide a choice of high and low gear ratios and the same 850mm wading depth as other models in the Range Rover Sport line-up.

The Range Rover Sport SVR will arrive in Land Rover showrooms in 2015.

Toyota Makes The Best Even Better – Toyota 86 Sports Car

0

Toyota has dialled up the sheer driving fun and razor-sharp handling of its award-winning 86 sports car by introducing subtle refinements to its widely praised suspension.

Toyota-86-Sports-Car

Enthusiastic drivers will appreciate under-the-skin fine-tuning that delivers a more rigid suspension setup for even better handling response and steering feel while also enhancing ride quality.

The car’s global chief engineer, Tetsuya Tada, met the often-competing targets for a smoother ride and sharper handling by revising the way suspension components are attached to the chassis.

Mr Tada decreased body roll and increased handling stability and response by specifying new suspension mounts and adopting lower-friction oil, oil seals and guide bushings.

He re-tuned the shock absorbers and refined their characteristics, focusing on the initial movement and when the vehicle is operating at its limits or on wet roads.

Alongside greater responsiveness and more communicative handling, the latest evolution of the cult vehicle that is Australia’s best-selling sports car incorporates a package of internal and external upgrades.

For the interior, the GT variant is now fitted with the same instrument cluster as the higher-grade GTS. It includes a digital speed read-out and a rev indicator light to warn of the approaching red line. The auto GT also gains a shift-position indicator.

The GT manual’s recommended retail price remains unchanged at $29,990* – the same price quoted when the 86 burst onto the local market more than two years ago. The GT automatic also retains its price at $32,790*.

For the 86 GTS, Toyota has added a reversing camera and a sportier carbon-look motif for the instrument panel surround. Prices for these variants have risen by just $500 (manual) and $800 (auto).

Toyota has taken the opportunity provided by this update to add a shark-fin antenna to the roof of both grades for aerodynamic as well as aesthetic reasons.

It has also freshened the exterior paint palette with two new shades of white and silver paint available to buyers.

Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the latest update reflects the commitment of the company’s engineers to continual improvement of an already brilliant driver’s car.

“Toyota 86 is an affordable sports car that is all about driver involvement, and its chief engineer is passionate about constantly evolving and enhancing this aspect of its appeal,” Mr Cramb said.

“This clever fine-tuning of the universally acclaimed dynamics of the car will ensure its handling responsiveness is even more closely attuned to the driver’s intentions,” he said.

Sales of the 86 in Australia have passed 10,900 – the highest total for any country outside Japan and the United States.

The Toyota 86 is covered by the capped price servicing plan, Toyota Service Advantage, with up to four scheduled services at just $170 each

Europe Gives All-New ASIMO A Warm Welcome

0

The all-new ASIMO, Honda’s humanoid robot, made a European debut in Brussels, Belgium in front of a crowd of gathered media. The All-New ASIMO, which Honda hopes in the future will able to help people in need, incorporates several significant advancements over its predecessors. These include improved intelligence, enhanced hand dexterity (enabling it to open a bottle and pour a drink or express sign language), as well as the ability to run faster, run backwards, climb and descend stairs more smoothly, hop and even jump.

ASIMO-UNI-Cub-β

The advancements take Honda another step closer to creating a robot for practical use in the home environment, or wherever assistance is required.

Also making its European debut at the event was the UNI-CUB β (beta), a new personal mobility device that features Honda’s omni-directional driving wheel system and utilizes balance control technology amassed from Honda’s extensive research into bipedal humanoid robots.

ASIMO was first introduced to Europe in 2003 at a scientific symposium entitled “From High Tech to Intelligence – The Challenge of Humanoid Robots” held at the Technical University of Darmstadt.

Since then, ASIMO has travelled throughout Europe with a tour which has included many prestigious scientific and robotics events. ASIMO is also used extensively to inspire young people about science and engineering, attending events such as the Science Picnic in Warsaw, the world’s largest public outdoor science event, and the Greenlight for Girls event in Brussels, to inspire young women to consider a future in maths, science, technology and engineering.

The All-New ASIMO and the UNI-Cub β made their European debuts at a press conference held at the ASIMO Studio in Brussels, Belgium. The ASIMO Studio is the home of Honda Robotics communications in Europe.

Mitsubishi Electric To Launch Super-mini Full SiC DIPPFC Module
